When Stella Jo Chandler gets an offer to work at the Second Chance Ranch celebrity rehab facility right after graduating from Texas A&M, she’s tempted to turn it down. She wants to help real people with real problems, not spoiled celebrities going on vacation for publicity. But growing up on her family’s ranch left her with a love of horses that draws her to the opportunity. How bad can babysitting a bunch of strung out celebrities be?
What she didn’t count on was being roped into a tangled mess with infamous rocker and three-time rehab drop out Van Ransom on her first day. And she sure didn’t expect to feel the overwhelming attraction that pulls her to the man who has more issues than she can count on both hands. Like the hotel rooms and tour buses he’s famous for trashing, the havoc he could wreak on Stella’s heart would be irreparable.
Van isn’t at Second Chance for publicity or because he’s suffering from “exhaustion”. He’s on the brink of destruction, and he needs the kind of help Stella isn’t sure she can give. But without her, he’ll lose everything. Because he’s on his last second chance.
Chelly’s Thoughts <3<3<3<3<3+
Stella Jo Chandler seems to have it all on the outside. She grew up on a horse ranch, loved to ride, and had dreams of bringing home the Triple Crown, but one fall at the Kentucky Showmaster’s Showcase and those dreams were shattered. She never got back on a horse again, but she still loved them deeply. Growing up with a harsh, demanding mom who only wanted a real-life doll to dress up and show off, and a dad who never gave her the time of day no matter how hard she strived for perfection to please him, the barn was the only place she felt happy, wanted, and needed. Now that’s she’s graduating college, her mom wants her to move back home where she belongs, but Stella is offered a job at the Second Chance Ranch, a celebrity rehab facility. Not sure if that’s what she wants, but positive she doesn’t ever want to go back home, her decision is made when she bumps into a beautiful stranger during a tour of the facility.
Van Ransom is the gorgeous, mesmerizing, tatted-up lead singer of the band Hostage for Ransom. After waking up in a hospital (again) after nearly OD’ing (again), his manager and his label have had enough, so he’s given an ultimatum – either he successfully completes 90 days in rehab and gets his stuff together, or he loses the record deal, his manager, and his band. He’s tried the rehab thing again and again, but this is his last second chance. He’s not happy with the choices he’s given, after all, the drugs and alcohol are the only things that drown out the voices and dreams that torture him constantly, but if he gets to see the beautiful girl he bumped into while checking in, maybe it won’t be so bad. She tries to deny him, but Van Ransom wants her, and he always gets what he wants.
Neither can stop thinking about the other. For the first time, Stella makes Van actually want to be a better person, someone worthy of her, and he actually cares about how she feels, unlike all the other women, the ones who he’s only with for a release of the sexual kind. Stella knows Van is dangerous and a cocky womanizer, but she can’t help but want to help him, to fix him. She tries to keep everything professional – a relationship with a patient is grounds for immediate termination – but with the feelings he makes her feel, that is becoming impossible.
Van knew he was broken – from the hellish childhood he had, the dark secrets he carries deep inside, and the drug addiction he can’t quit. Stella is broken in her own way – she’s empty inside, she feels nothing. Stella wants to fix Van, to unlock what is buried deep, but will she fail him like she has everyone else? Van is the only one that has been able to make Stella feel anything, and she desperately needs to him to bring out that side of her, but will he ruin her like he has so much else in life? Together, can they heal each other without ruining their own lives in the process?
Last Second Chance is a story about healing, living life, forbidden love, and finding light in the darkness, and I absolutely LOVE everything single thing about this story. Van Ransom can hold me hostage anytime 😉 There is just something about a beautifully broken man that draws me in, makes me want to fix him and make him whole.
